About Filtro Eco-Innovador

Gray water treatment

Chile is going through the deepest and most extensive drought in its history. The drought is an issue that directly affects the Valparaíso Region. This has led us to investigate the use we give to water in our homes, where we could notice how much water we waste on a daily basis while performing the various household routines. To solve the reuse of greywater at home, we introduce the Eco-Innovative Filter. With this filter we accomplish cleansing the incoming water of impurities and thus being able to reuse it at home

The creators of «Filtro Eco-Innovador» are four students from Liceo América from the Valparaíso region.

STAGES OF FILTRO ECO-INNOVADOR

First prototype

The first prototype used a polyethylene filter which goal was to collect the water from the washing machine. The frame of this filter was built with a PVC pipe within which we positioned several levels with their corresponding decontaminating materials.

This prototype alternates levels with and without materials so that water flows more easily.

Second prototype

In the second prototype, we changed the PVC structure with jars of biodegradable polyethylene, which are connected to each other under pressure.

In this prototype each level contains a purifier material, and the hose of the washer connects directly to the top jar, allowing gravity to facilitate the passing of the gray water through the different levels of the filter.

Final Prototype

Our final prototype was adapted to be connected to a 200 lt container so as to store the gray waters.

The Eco-Innovative Filter is connected through a water valve at the bottom of the container. This allows us a longer filtering and purifying time, significantly improving the quality of the resulting water.

TEAM FILTRO ECO-INNOVADOR

Belén Pizarro

What was your experience developing the project to apply to Los Creadores like?

It was a very good experience; I learnt many new things. I like the fact that I was gaining experience, being part of an increasingly close-knit team, and, above all, the support of the teacher guide, which was essential for us.

What would you tell other boys and girls so that they become interested in sciences and technologies?

I would tell them that participating in new experiences is very beneficial for the future. Learning about sciences and new technologies allows you to create projects that benefit the environment or a community.

Francisca Cortés

What was your experience developing the project to apply to Los Creadores like?

What I liked most was the camaraderie we shared, because we came from different classes and then we became an extraordinary team.

What would you tell other boys and girls so that they become interested in sciences and technologies?

I would tell them that current problems, caused by prior generations, can be solved by us, young people, and help improve the environment with simple solutions that can be produced with technology and science.

Sebastián Arias

What was your experience developing the project to apply to Los Creadores like?

It was a rather fun experience because I applied with a friend and other schoolmates which finally became a great team.

What would you tell other boys and girls so that they become interested in sciences and technologies?

In the times we are living in today, we should all at least have slight knowledge of sciences and technologies to help the environment and the planet.

Joaquín Soto

What was your experience developing the project to apply to Los Creadores like?

What I liked most was to be increasingly innovating when the team met, advancing on the research to achieve a final product with a high level.

What would you tell other boys and girls so that they become interested in sciences and technologies?

I would tell them to dare to experiment with technology and sciences because with time knowledge increases and it will be something very interesting.

Marcela Otárola

Biology and Science teacher at Liceo América with 6 years of experience. Botanist as a hobby and in charge of the Ecological Brigade at Liceo América, lover of nature and free spaces, positive defender of the environment.

Why do you think it is important to teach technology and innovation tools to students?

Is important because it is the best tool to produce changes. Technology has come to stay; it facilitates our lives and improves its quality. From technology we can develop better organization systems, environmental care tools, and even better services for human beings.

Acerca de su Liceo

The Liceo América, located in the Los Andres commune, Valparaíso, is an establishment of Municipal education and it dates back to the year 1920. The Liceo America is a polytechnic school, providing scientific-humanistic and technical professional education, the later one with two specialties: Electricity and Construction.

Currently, the Liceo América is undergoing a methodological and infrastructure transformation to become the first Liceo pioneering on Project-Based Learning at a national level.
